The Review
Tokunbo is exactly how I like my action thriller: a great story line, good plot, twists and turns, the usual and unusual villains, and a happy ending. Yes, I am a hopeless romantic, and I want that in my movies. Life is hard enough.
From the get-go, Gideon Okeke shows you he hasn’t come to play; he is fully in his role, and completely committed to it, and he gives a fantastic performance throughout the movie.
The movie has no unnecessary scenes, everything moves along in a fast-paced way, but not rushed. Some point makes me feel the timeline is warped, but it is resolved eventually. The story is fully Nigerian, and yet, has the international feel to it. I am quite impressed with the plot and storytelling.
Gideon Okeke shows us his years on Tinsel truly honed his skills, and I want to see more of him in lead roles.
Chidi Mokeke is getting typecast as a crime lord, perhaps because is excellent in the role; he is a delight to watch.
Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi has the role of the executive working woman down to a science and an art. The poise. The carriage. She is great in the role, and just like Chidi, she is almost getting typecast, always with her nose in the air, but I don’t hate it.
It is refreshing to see Ivie Okujaye on the screen again. She has been away for a while. She is a bit too reserved for my liking, and I hope she gets more roles where she needs to dig deeper. But she is great as the conniving Personal Assistant to Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi.
Darasimi Nadi is a child actor that deserves every award coming her way; she is fully in her role as the precocious child who takes no nonsense.
I am not too down with the car chases, but I thoroughly enjoyed the fight scenes and the choreography of it, and the rain is realistic. The gritty cinematography is just perfect for the movie, and the ending is not rushed. Tokunbo is an overall outstanding movie, and deserves multiple watches.
