The Review
I am not a fan of the horror genre, but this movie is one I find very interesting. It is a fully Nigerian story, set in international locations but never losing its true essence of being a Nigerian story. I am quite impressed with the plot, acting, progression, and cinematography.
While I am not familiar with most of the actors in this movie, I am blown away by their performances, both the young and the old. Even the caucasian actors give a good report of themselves. The acting is top notch, there are no wasted words or unnecessary acting, and the pace of the movie is appropriate for the genre.
Wale Ojo is an award-winning actor for a reason; give him only two words in a movie, and he would say those words like he was the lead actor. He has very few scenes in this movie, but his presence is fully felt. Nse Ikpe-Etim is a master of her craft, and she leaves everything on the scene. This is the first time I would encounter Vanessa Vanderpuye and now I want to find her filmography and watch everything she has made; she is a fantastic actor. Dimeji Ewuoso is another actor I want to find what he has done previously.
A Song from the Dark is not only well directed, but also well edited. Some movies get into trouble during post production; this is not the case. This movie is edited to give the right ambience and mood to fit the horror genre, without being too scary. It does not have blood and gore just for the sake of it; they are all appropriate to the storytelling.
The director and producer appears to be a new kid on the block, and he gives a good report of himself. I look forward to other works he will produce.
